Hugo Besson est un basketteur professionnel français qui est né le 26 avril 2001 et dont la famille (du côté de son père) est connue dans le monde du basket français. Il a été formé aux postes de meneur et arrière aux centres de formation d’Antibes puis de Chalon, où il fera son début dans le monde professionnel. La saison passée, il avait été prêté par Cholet à Saint-Quentin en Pro B : une franche réussite, il était meilleur marqueur de Pro B et a été élu meilleur espoir du championnat. Après cette belle saison, il décide de mettre son nom à la Draft 2021 avant de faire machine arrière et de vouloir tenter une expérience à l’étranger, pour grandir avant d’intégrer la grande ligue. Il choisit le championnat australien de basket (NBL) pour espérer faire monter sa cote comme l’ont fait Lamelo Ball ou récemment Josh Giddey. Il rejoint les New Zealand Breakers, il était donc le coéquipier d'un autre Français, Ousmane Dieng, lui aussi visant la draft 2022.

1m97 pour 82kg, Hugo ne sera pas un joueur dominant physiquement mais il a des atouts, comme la vitesse balle en mains, la fluidité d’exécution, de très haut niveau, ce qui lui permet de figurer sur la plpupart des "boards" des médias drafts (généralement entre la 30e et 50e place).

Du coté offensif, il n’était pas forcement créateur dans le sens "meneur", cette saison, mais plutôt un porteur secondaire qui peut prendre des initiatives balle en mains quand il le faut. Surtout, il peut vivre sur le terrain en loin du ballon, grâce à son intelligence et son adresse. Balle en mains, il sait se créer son propre tir, que ce soit derrière la ligne à 3 points ou à mi-distance. Il aime driver car il va souvent plus vite que l’adversaire et il n’a pas peur d’aller au cercle au contact des grands, malgré son gabarit un peu frêle (pour la NBA). Son playmaking n’est pas forcément résumé dans les statistiques, on l'a vu faire des décalages pour ses coéquipiers avec des passes lorsqu’il drive, ou en transition. Il est connu comme un grand scoreur qui n’hésite pas lorsqu’il a la balle, il a plusieurs flèches à son arc pour mettre le ballon dans le panier même s’il n’est pas encore capable d’être efficace aux 3 niveaux de manière régulières. En effet, il n’est pas toujours en réussite proche du cercle car il manque clairement de puissance. Il tourne a 38% au tir avec 12 tentatives par match et 30% a 3 points sur 6 tentatives par match, cela prouve la mentalité de Hugo qui n’a pas peur de prendre ses responsabilités, même s’il a un coup de moins bien : on appelle ça un mental de shooteur. Son handle est très bon ce qui lui permet de bien voyager après l'écran ou dans les zones intermédiaires, son qi est élevé ce qui lui permet de bien lire les pick&roll, ce sera une arme en NBA. Sa sélection de tir est à travailler mais au contraire il ne faut pas tirer la sonnette d’alarme pour ça, c'était ce qu'on lui demandait aux Breakers cette saison, ce n'est pas le rôle qu'il aura potentiellement en NBA, même si son ticket d'entrée, c'est aussi d'être un "bad shot maker".

Du coté défensif, Hugo n’est pas à son avantage, sa défense sur le porteur de balle n’est pas bonne et il sera ciblé par les attaques adverses. En Australie, il défendait surtout dans les corners pour lui éviter d’être exposé défensivement. Il est souvent trop axé sur la balle au lieu de suivre son défenseur. Son intelligence de jeu lui permettra néanmoins de faire quelques interceptions par match, car il sait lire les lignes de passes.

Hugo Besson s’est déclaré candidat à la draft NBA 2022 après une saison très convaincante en Australie. Pour le moment il est projeté au début de 2eme tour. Je pense qu’il devra faire ses gammes en G League ou en Europe avant d’avoir du temps de jeu en NBA.

Born on April 26 2001, French combo guard Hugo Besson is twenty years old and will be 21 by draft night. His father Jean-Paul and grandfather Paul both played basketball professionally, so he's grown up in the French system and turned pro in 2016-17 at the U21 level. There's a strong basketball pedigree in his family and it shows both in Hugo's game and the way he carries himself. He's quite confident in his abilities. He knows what to do and where to be on the floor. He isn't one of these players with who basketball IQ will ever be a sticking point. If he wants to make it in the NBA, he'll have to learn to play within himself and carve out a role where he can contribute, but he's already got the knowledge to do this. At 6'3 (1m91) and 196 lbs (89kg), he'll never be physically dominant at the highest level, so it'll be important for him to figure out what he can do to help a team win in the NBA.

That's the thing with Besson. Last year in St. Quentin, he could do everything: shooting, dribbling, passing, finishing. He was like a 2K player after someone invested 20$ of VC in him. He did the right thing by transferring to New Zealand Breakers in the NBL for the 2021-22, playing at an increased (or "different", depending on your perspectives) level without sacrificing his minutes. Besson played 30.2 mpg in St. Quentin and 28.3 mpg for the Breakers. A lot of problematic areas emerged for Besson, this year. His finishing (which was elite in St. Quentin) took a nose dive for obvious reasons. He's got the speed, but not the shiftiness to finish through high level defenders. Once things stray from a straight line trajectory, it gets more difficult. This isn't critical. If Besson starts working seriously on his body, he could improve this aspect of his game. His legs and posterior chain in general could use some explosion work.

Although his shooting percentages are down across the board, Hugo Besson's calling card is still his long-distance shooting. He's one of these players who can create his shot off the dribble and pull up on a dime to create something out of nothing. This is a very valuable skill, but it's a double-edged sword in his case. Since he's wired to score, he's going to settle for tough jumpers if he gets chased out of the free throw line, which can derail his rhythmn. He's a much better shooter (and creator in general) than his numbers show. He's got 1.5 apg this season, but he's a very skilled and patient pick and roll passer. He can thread the needle and find his teammates with all sorts of difficult passes, but most times he's looking to create for himself. If he's going to see any game time in the NBA, he will NEED to play point guard expect these numbers to go up in a different context.

Defensively, Hugo Besson is obviously limited but he's a sneaky good athlete. I'm not sure he'll ever be a plus or a neutral defender in the NBA, but he'll be the type you can hide on defense because of his production. He'll also pull the convenient steal to turn the game around from time to time. But you won't even rely on him for it. At least, I don't think so. He's not that kind of player.

In a purely aesthetical comparison, I see a lot of CJ McCollum in Hugo Besson. Obviously, his dribble is not as airtight as McCollum and he's got a long way to go to go there, but he's that kind of on-ball secondary creator and mediocre defender who will put more points up than he'll allow. Not a sure shot to make it in the NBA by any means, but he could blossom into McCollum type of player in Europe. I could see that quite easily. I'm almost 100% certain he'll be a draft-and-stash IF he gets drafted. One way or another, staying another year overseas and leveling up is the smart decision for him again in 2022-23, whether he wears an NBA team cap in June or not.
